Mkomazi National Park is a hidden gem in northern Tanzania, offering a remote and authentic safari experience far from the tourist crowds. Located between the Pare and Usambara Mountains, the park features vast savannah plains, scattered acacia woodlands, and dramatic mountain backdrops.
Mkomazi is renowned for its conservation programs, particularly the successful breeding programs for the endangered African wild dog and the black rhino. The park is home to a diverse array of wildlife including elephants, giraffes, lions, leopards, cheetahs, and over450 species of birds.
The game drive takes you through varied landscapes, from open grasslands to riverine forests, offering excellent opportunities for wildlife photography. The park's relative isolation means you are likely to have sightings almost to yourself.
This is a long day trip from Moshi (approximately2.5-3 hours each way). The early departure is rewarded with exceptional wildlife viewing in one of Tanzania's most pristine wilderness areas.
The best time for safaris in Tanzania is during the dry season from June to October, when animals gather around water sources and vegetation is sparse for easier viewing. January to February is also excellent, especially for calving season in the Serengeti. However, safaris can be enjoyed year-round, with the green season (November to May) offering lush landscapes and fewer crowds.
Essential items include: neutral-colored clothing (khaki, olive, beige), comfortable walking shoes, a wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, binoculars, a camera with zoom lens, and a light jacket for early morning game drives. We recommend layering as temperatures can vary throughout the day. Avoid bright colors and dark blue/black (which can attract tsetse flies). We provide binoculars and field guides on every safari.
