Detailed Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1
Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp
Rainforest Zone | 3-4 hours hiking

Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins at Londorossi Gate (2,100m) on the western slopes. After completing park formalities, we start our trek through the pristine Lemosho Glades, a beautiful montane forest rich with wildlife. The trail is gentle, winding through ancient trees draped with moss, with the sounds of birds and monkeys accompanying your first steps on the mountain.

This short first day is designed for a gentle introduction to the mountain. We arrive at Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,750m) after 3-4 hours of hiking. The camp sits among towering trees and offers a peaceful setting for your first night. Your guides will conduct an initial briefing about the days ahead and ensure everyone is feeling well at this moderate altitude.

Day 2
Mti Mkubwa to Shira 1 Camp
Moorland Zone | 5-6 hours hiking

After breakfast, we leave the rainforest behind and enter the enchanting moorland zone. The trail steepens as we ascend through rolling hills covered in giant heather and lobelias. This is where you get your first glimpse of the magnificent Shira Plateau spread out before you, with Kibo Peak looming in the distance.

The landscape undergoes a dramatic transformation as we gain altitude. After crossing several streams and enjoying lunch with panoramic views, we reach Shira 1 Camp (3,505m) on the western edge of the Shira Plateau. The camp offers spectacular sunset views over the plateau and, weather permitting, Mount Meru visible in the distance. The evening is spent acclimatizing and enjoying the first of many incredible African sunsets.

Day 3
Shira 1 to Shira 2 Camp
High Moorland | 3-4 hours hiking

Today is a relatively gentle day designed primarily for acclimatization as we traverse the spectacular Shira Plateau. This is one of the highest plateaus in the world, formed from an ancient volcanic caldera. The terrain is relatively flat, allowing your body to adjust to the altitude while walking through an otherworldly landscape of volcanic rock formations and scattered giant groundsels.

We pass by the Shira Cathedral, a dramatic rocky outcrop that offers excellent photo opportunities with views of Kibo's Western Breach. After a leisurely 3-4 hour hike, we arrive at Shira 2 Camp (3,840m) in the center of the plateau. The afternoon is spent on an optional acclimatization hike to a higher elevation before returning to camp for dinner and rest.

Day 4
Shira 2 to Moir Hut
Alpine Desert | 5-6 hours hiking

This is where the 8-day itinerary differs from the 7-day version, offering superior acclimatization. We leave Shira 2 Camp and head northeast toward the Lava Tower, passing through the alpine desert zone. The landscape becomes increasingly stark and beautiful, with volcanic rock formations dominating the terrain.

Instead of descending to Barranco Camp, we continue to Moir Hut (4,200m), a lesser-visited camp that provides excellent acclimatization opportunities. The camp sits at the base of Lent Hills, and an optional afternoon hike to the top of these hills offers stunning views and crucial altitude adaptation. This extra day at altitude significantly improves your summit chances.

Day 5
Moir Hut to Barranco Camp
Alpine Desert | 6-7 hours hiking

Today's trek takes us from Moir Hut to Barranco Camp via the impressive Lava Tower. We first ascend to the Lava Tower (4,630m), a 100-meter high volcanic plug that dominates the landscape. This section provides excellent high-altitude acclimatization before we begin our descent. The air is noticeably thinner here, and this is often where climbers first feel the effects of altitude.

After lunch at Lava Tower, we descend steeply into the Barranco Valley. This "climb high, sleep low" strategy is crucial for acclimatization. The descent takes us through the surreal alpine desert landscape to Barranco Camp (3,960m), set in a beautiful valley beneath the imposing Barranco Wall. The views of the wall and the surrounding peaks create an unforgettable campsite atmosphere.

Day 6
Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Alpine Desert | 4-5 hours hiking

Today's highlight is conquering the famous Barranco Wall, affectionately known as the "Breakfast Wall." This 257-meter rock face requires some scrambling, but it's not technically difficult. Our experienced guides will help you navigate the rocky sections safely. The sense of achievement when you reach the top is incredible, and the views from the top are absolutely breathtaking.

After the wall, we traverse several ridges through the alpine desert, passing beneath the southern glaciers with their stunning ice formations. We descend into the Karanga Valley, the last water stop on the route, before climbing to Karanga Camp (4,035m). This shorter hiking day allows for essential rest and further acclimatization before the summit push.

Day 7
Karanga to Barafu Camp
Alpine Desert | 3-4 hours hiking

We make our way to Barafu Camp (4,640m), the base camp for our summit attempt. The trail is steep and demanding as we cross the barren alpine desert. The terrain becomes increasingly rocky and inhospitable, with only the hardiest lichens surviving in this harsh environment. The air is noticeably thinner now, and maintaining a slow, steady pace is essential.

We arrive at Barafu in the early afternoon to maximize rest time before the midnight summit push. Barafu, meaning "ice" in Swahili, sits on an exposed ridge with commanding views of Mawenzi Peak. After an early dinner, we try to sleep. Your guides will wake you around 11 PM for hot drinks and final preparations before starting the ascent to Uhuru Peak under the starlit sky.

Day 8
Summit Day: Barafu to Uhuru Peak to Mweka
Arctic Zone | 12-15 hours hiking

Summit day begins at midnight. In the darkness, guided by headlamps, we start the slow climb toward Stella Point on the crater rim. The trail zigzags up the mountain, with each step bringing you closer to your goal. The 5-7 hour climb to Stella Point (5,739m) is the most challenging part of the trek, but your guides will be there with constant encouragement and support.

At Stella Point, you'll witness one of the most spectacular sunrises imaginable, with the glaciers glowing in the golden light. After a brief rest, continue for 1-2 hours along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the Roof of Africa. Standing at the summit sign, you'll feel an overwhelming sense of achievement. After photos and celebrations, we descend to Barafu for a short rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp (3,080m) for the night.

Day 9
Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
Rainforest Zone | 3-4 hours hiking

Your final day on the mountain is a descent through the lush rainforest to Mweka Gate (1,640m). After breakfast and a celebratory song from your mountain crew, we begin the trek down. The trail can be slippery after rain, so trekking poles are helpful. As we descend, the air becomes warmer and richer in oxygen, and you'll feel your energy returning.

At Mweka Gate, you'll sign out and receive your summit certificate – green for Stella Point or gold for Uhuru Peak. This certificate represents your incredible achievement. A vehicle will transfer you back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha for a hot shower, celebratory meal, and well-earned rest. Congratulations – you have conquered Kilimanjaro!

Frequently Asked Questions

Why choose the 8-day over the 7-day Lemosho Route?

The 8-day Lemosho Route offers superior acclimatization with an extra day at Moir Hut (4,200m). This additional day significantly improves your body's adaptation to altitude, resulting in our highest summit success rate of 97% compared to 96% for the 7-day version. The extra day also allows for more time to enjoy the stunning landscapes and reduces the physical stress of the trek.

What makes the Lemosho Route the best for acclimatization?

The Lemosho Route follows the "climb high, sleep low" principle perfectly. The gradual western approach allows for slow altitude gain, and the traverse of the Shira Plateau provides extended time at moderate elevations. The 8-day version adds the crucial extra day at Moir Hut, giving your body the best possible chance to adapt before the summit push. This makes it ideal for climbers of all experience levels.

How physically demanding is the 8-day route?

While rated as moderate difficulty, the 8-day Lemosho is actually less physically demanding than shorter routes due to the excellent acclimatization. Daily hiking ranges from 3-7 hours at a slow, steady pace. The extra day allows for better rest and recovery. However, summit day remains challenging at 12-15 hours. We recommend 2-3 months of preparation including cardio, strength training, and hiking with a loaded backpack.

What wildlife might I see on the Lemosho Route?

The western approach through the Lemosho Glades offers the best wildlife viewing on Kilimanjaro. In the rainforest zone, you may encounter black and white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and various bird species including the beautiful turaco with its crimson wings. You might also spot forest elephants, buffaloes, and even leopards, though these are rare. As you ascend, wildlife becomes scarcer, but the unique flora like giant groundsels and lobelias provide their own fascination.

Is the 8-day route suitable for first-time high-altitude trekkers?

Yes! The 8-day Lemosho Route is actually our top recommendation for first-time high-altitude trekkers. The extended itinerary provides the best acclimatization schedule, reducing the risk of altitude sickness and increasing your summit chances. No technical climbing skills are required – just good physical fitness, determination, and a positive attitude. Our experienced guides will support you every step of the way, monitoring your health and providing encouragement.
