Route Overview

The Machame Route, affectionately known as the "steepest and most challenging route," is one of the most popular paths to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. This 7-day itinerary offers trekkers a diverse and spectacular journey through multiple ecological zones, from lush rainforest to alpine desert, culminating at the majestic Uhuru Peak.

What sets the Machame Route apart is its excellent acclimatization profile combined with stunning scenery. The route approaches from the south, providing dramatic views of the mountain and surrounding landscapes. With a 80% success rate, this route is perfect for climbers who want both adventure and a high probability of reaching the summit.

The trail is more demanding than the Marangu Route, earning it the "Whiskey" nickname (compared to Marangu's "Coca-Cola" route), but the rewards are well worth the extra effort. You'll traverse the spectacular Shira Plateau, conquer the challenging Barranco Wall, and approach the summit via Barafu Camp.

Day 1
Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Cave Camp
Montane Rainforest | 5-7 hours hiking

After breakfast at your hotel in Moshi, depart for Umbwe Gate, the official starting point of the Umbwe Route. At Umbwe Gate, your guide and mountain crew will complete the necessary park registration and entry procedures.

Begin your trek along the famous Umbwe Ridge. The trail immediately becomes steep and adventurous, climbing through dense montane rainforest following a narrow ridge between deep valleys created by the Umbwe and Lonzo rivers. The forest is rich with tall trees, moss-covered branches, thick undergrowth and birdlife.

After several hours of challenging hiking, arrive at Umbwe Camp, also commonly referred to as Umbwe Cave/Bivouac Camp. Your mountain crew will prepare the camp while you rest and enjoy your first evening on the mountain.

Day 2
Umbwe Cave Camp to Barranco Camp
Rainforest to Moorland | 5-7 hours hiking

After breakfast, continue your ascent along the dramatic Umbwe Ridge. The trail remains steep as you gradually leave the dense rainforest behind. As you gain altitude, the vegetation becomes shorter and the landscape opens into the moorland zone.

The trail follows the ridge with spectacular views into the valleys below. On clear days, you may begin to see dramatic views of Kibo Peak. The terrain becomes increasingly rocky as you approach the Barranco area. After several hours of trekking, the Umbwe Route joins the southern circuit at Barranco Camp.

Barranco is one of the most spectacular campsites on Kilimanjaro, surrounded by giant senecio plants, volcanic cliffs and the impressive Barranco Wall. Take time to rest after this challenging ascent.

Day 3
Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Alpine Desert | 4-5 hours hiking

After breakfast, begin one of the most exciting sections of the Umbwe Route: the ascent of the famous Barranco Wall. From camp, the wall looks intimidating, but it is a non-technical scramble and does not require climbing equipment.

You will use your hands in some sections while your experienced mountain guides assist you safely through the rocky terrain. As you climb higher, enjoy spectacular views back toward Barranco Valley and the surrounding mountain landscape. After reaching the top, continue along a series of ridges and valleys, descending into the Karanga Valley before climbing again toward Karanga Camp.

This relatively short day gives you valuable time to rest and acclimatize before the final approach to Barafu Camp. Enjoy lunch, relax around camp and prepare for tomorrow's ascent.

Day 4
Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Alpine Desert | 3-4 hours hiking

After breakfast, begin the final ascent toward Barafu Camp, the high camp used for the summit attempt. The trail climbs steadily through the barren alpine desert. Vegetation becomes extremely sparse and the terrain becomes increasingly rocky and exposed as you gain altitude.

Continue at a slow and steady pace while your guide monitors your condition and helps you manage the increasing altitude. After approximately 3-4 hours, arrive at Barafu Camp, located at approximately 4,640-4,700 m. Barafu means "ice" in Swahili and is the final high camp before the summit.

Upon arrival, enjoy lunch and take time to rest. Your guide will conduct a detailed summit briefing covering the summit schedule, weather conditions, clothing and equipment, hydration, altitude safety and emergency procedures. Prepare your summit clothing and equipment before having an early dinner. Try to sleep as much as possible because you will wake around midnight.

Day 5
Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
Summit Day | 12-16 hours hiking

This is the most challenging and rewarding day of your Kilimanjaro adventure. Around midnight, your guides will wake you for the summit attempt. After a light meal and final preparations, begin climbing in darkness using headlamps. The trail is steep and demanding as you ascend over rocky and loose volcanic terrain toward Stella Point.

The combination of high altitude, freezing temperatures, darkness and steep terrain makes this the most physically and mentally demanding part of the trek. Your guides will maintain a slow "pole pole" pace while monitoring your condition. Reach Stella Point at approximately 5,739 m on the crater rim. After a short rest, continue along the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak. After approximately 1-2 more hours, reach Uhuru Peak at 5,895 m, the highest point in Africa.

After the summit celebration, begin the descent toward Barafu Camp. Take a short rest and continue descending toward Mweka Camp. As you lose altitude, the landscape gradually changes from alpine desert toward moorland. Arrive at Mweka Camp, enjoy a well-earned meal and rest.

Day 6
Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
Montane Rainforest | 3-4 hours hiking

After breakfast, begin your final descent from Mweka Camp toward Mweka Gate. The trail passes through the beautiful montane rainforest, where the landscape becomes greener and more humid as you lose altitude.

Enjoy your final hours on Mount Kilimanjaro and reflect on the incredible achievement of reaching the summit. After approximately 3-4 hours of hiking, arrive at Mweka Gate. Complete the park exit procedures and collect your official Kilimanjaro summit certificate.

Your vehicle will meet you at the gate and transfer you back to your hotel in Moshi. Enjoy a well-earned shower, meal and relaxing afternoon at your hotel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is it called the "steepest and most challenging route"?

The Machame Route earned its nickname because it's considered more challenging and "stronger" than the Marangu Route, which is known as the "Coca-Cola Route." Just as whiskey is stronger than Coca-Cola, Machame offers a more demanding but more rewarding experience with better scenery and acclimatization.

How does Machame compare to Lemosho?

Both routes offer excellent acclimatization and high success rates. Machame is slightly shorter (62km vs 70km) and starts from the south rather than the west. Machame is more popular and can be busier, while Lemosho offers a more remote wilderness experience. Both routes converge at Barranco Camp and share the same summit approach.

Is the Barranco Wall dangerous?

Despite looking intimidating, the Barranco Wall is not technically difficult and doesn't require climbing equipment. It's a scramble requiring you to use your hands in sections, but our experienced guides will assist you every step of the way. Most climbers find it one of the most fun and rewarding parts of the trek.

What is the best time to climb Machame?

The best times are during the dry seasons: January to mid-March and June to October. These months offer the most stable weather and clearest views. January-February tends to be warmer, while June-October provides excellent visibility. Avoid April-May and November when heavy rains can make the trail more challenging.

How should I prepare for this route?

We recommend 2-3 months of preparation including cardio exercises (running, cycling, swimming), strength training focusing on legs and core, and practice hikes with a loaded backpack. Mental preparation is equally important - the summit day is challenging but achievable with determination and our expert guidance.

"Amazing experience!"

The Machame route was everything we hoped for and more. The scenery changed every day, from rainforest to alpine desert. The Barranco Wall was challenging but fun. All 6 of our group made it to the summit thanks to the great acclimatization schedule!
