Why Choose the Shira Route?
The Shira Route is one of the most scenic and remote approaches to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Beginning at Londorossi Gate on the western side of the mountain, the route crosses the spectacular Shira Plateau — a vast high-altitude moorland that offers dramatic volcanic landscapes and expansive mountain views.
A Remote and Beautiful Beginning
Unlike the more popular Machame and Marangu routes, the Shira Route begins with a drive to the Morum Barrier, placing you high on the mountain from the start. This means you begin trekking across the Shira Plateau immediately, surrounded by unique alpine vegetation and volcanic formations.
Excellent Acclimatization Profile
The7-day itinerary follows the southern circuit, providing excellent acclimatization through the classic "climb high, sleep low" approach. The trek to Lava Tower at4,600 metres before descending to Barranco Camp is particularly beneficial for altitude adaptation.
Diverse Landscapes
Throughout the trek, you will experience an incredible variety of landscapes — from the open moorland of the Shira Plateau to the rugged alpine desert near Lava Tower, the dramatic Barranco Valley with its famous wall, and the exposed terrain leading to Barafu Camp.
Summit Success
With7 days on the mountain, the Shira Route offers a good balance between acclimatization and duration. The summit attempt begins from Barafu Camp during the night, leading you through Stella Point to the Roof of Africa at Uhuru Peak (5,895m).
Your adventure begins with a transfer to Londorossi Gate, where you complete the necessary park registration and entry procedures. From the gate, continue toward Morum Barrier, where the trek begins.
The trail crosses the spectacular Shira Plateau, one of the most scenic and remote areas of Mount Kilimanjaro. The landscape features open moorland, volcanic formations and expansive mountain views.
Continue toward Shira 1 Camp, where you will have dinner and rest for the night.
After breakfast, continue trekking across the beautiful Shira Plateau toward Shira2 Camp.
Today's route provides a gradual introduction to the higher elevations while allowing you to enjoy the surrounding volcanic landscape. Weather permitting, you may have impressive views toward Kibo and Mount Meru.
Arrive at Shira2 Camp and spend the afternoon resting, enjoying the scenery and preparing for the next stage of the trek.
Today is an important acclimatization day. Leave Shira2 Camp and trek toward Lava Tower, reaching approximately4,600 metres before descending toward Barranco Camp.
The climb toward Lava Tower takes you through increasingly rugged alpine terrain. Spending time at higher elevation before descending helps your body adapt to the altitude.
From Lava Tower, descend into the dramatic Barranco Valley, surrounded by impressive volcanic landscapes and the famous Barranco Wall.
Continue to Barranco Camp for dinner and overnight rest.
After breakfast, begin the day with the famous ascent of the Barranco Wall.
Although the wall looks impressive from below, the route provides a manageable climbing experience with several sections where you may use your hands for balance.
After reaching the top, continue across a series of ridges and valleys toward Karanga Valley.
The trail then climbs toward Karanga Camp, where you will rest and enjoy spectacular views of the surrounding mountain landscape.
Today you continue toward Barafu Camp, the final base camp before the summit attempt.
The trail climbs through increasingly rocky and alpine terrain as vegetation becomes sparse. As you approach Barafu, the environment becomes more exposed and dramatic.
Upon arrival, your mountain crew will brief you about the summit attempt and help you prepare your equipment.
Have an early dinner and rest as much as possible because the summit ascent begins during the night.
Today is the summit day and the most demanding part of the adventure.
You will wake during the night and begin the slow ascent toward the summit. The pace will be deliberately steady to conserve energy and help you manage the high altitude.
Continue toward Stella Point before proceeding along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak at5,895 metres, the highest point in Africa.
Celebrate your achievement at the Roof of Africa before beginning the descent.
After leaving the summit, descend toward Mweka Camp, where you will have dinner and finally get some well-earned rest.
After breakfast, begin your final descent through the lush montane forest toward Mweka Gate.
As you descend, the landscape changes dramatically from the high-altitude environment into greener forest surroundings.
Upon reaching Mweka Gate, complete the necessary park exit procedures and receive your summit certificate where applicable.
Your vehicle will meet you at the gate for the transfer back to Moshi or your next destination.
End of the7-Day Shira Route Kilimanjaro adventure.
The best time for safaris in Tanzania is during the dry season from June to October, when animals gather around water sources and vegetation is sparse for easier viewing. January to February is also excellent, especially for calving season in the Serengeti. However, safaris can be enjoyed year-round, with the green season (November to May) offering lush landscapes and fewer crowds.
Essential items include: neutral-colored clothing (khaki, olive, beige), comfortable walking shoes, a wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, binoculars, a camera with zoom lens, and a light jacket for early morning game drives. We recommend layering as temperatures can vary throughout the day. Avoid bright colors and dark blue/black (which can attract tsetse flies). We provide binoculars and field guides on every safari.

My daughter and I enjoyed a safari at Tarangire and Ngorongoro. It was a very satisfying trip because the guide showed us a lot of animals and took enough time for photos. The whole team was professional and made us feel safe throughout.
Fantastic and supportive professional guides! Their support gave us an amazing experience. The game drives were exceptional — we saw all the Big Five in just four days. Highly recommend Kili Altitude Adventures for any safari!
